What the job started with
A low-slope roof, the wood beneath it, and no daylight inside
This East Palo Alto house, in ZIP 94303, has a low-slope roof of about 1,900 square feet, the kind that takes a torch-applied membrane rather than shingles. The city issued a re-roof permit for a flat torch-down system across the whole of it.
Once the roof was open, 14 sheets of the plywood deck and the fascia board along the edge were replaced before the new membrane went down. The homeowner also had three skylights added in the same job, which meant cutting and framing new openings through the roof and finishing them on the ceiling side.

The work
What the job involved, in order
Permit
The City of East Palo Alto issued a re-roof permit for about 1,900 square feet of flat, torch-applied roofing.
Open the roof and repair the deck
With the old roofing off, 14 sheets of roof plywood were replaced, along with the fascia board at the roof edge.
Cut in three skylights
Three new skylight openings were cut through the roof and framed on the outside and the inside.
Torch-applied membrane
The Polyfresko flat roof system was torched down over the repaired deck in overlapping courses, sealed around each skylight curb and around the new metal vent stacks.
Finish the skylights inside
On the ceiling side, new drywall and texture went in around all three skylight openings.
Gutters and downspouts
The old gutters came down and were hauled away, and about 100 feet of new 5-inch black gutters went up with black downspouts.
Sign-off
The homeowner signed the flat roof, skylights and gutters off as complete in July 2026.
How it ended
A new flat roof on a repaired deck, with daylight through three skylights
The house came out of the job with a continuous torch-applied roof over a repaired plywood deck, new fascia and new black gutters at the edge, and three new skylight openings, finished inside. The work ran under a city re-roof permit and was signed off roughly three weeks after it started.
